KS2
Key Stage Two Curriculum
At Bridgwater College Academy, our Key Stage Two (KS2) curriculum (Years 3–6, ages 7–11) builds on the strong foundations established in earlier years and fully meets the requirements of the UK National Curriculum. Our aim is to deepen pupils’ knowledge, strengthen key skills, and nurture responsibility, resilience, and respect as they prepare for secondary education. Teaching is carefully planned to be engaging, inclusive and ambitious for every learner, sparking curiosity.
Reading
Reading continues to play a central role in our English curriculum. Pupils develop fluency, comprehension and critical thinking through daily reading opportunities, whole-class reading, and exposure to a rich range of high‑quality texts. Vocabulary development is prioritised and pupils are encouraged to read widely for pleasure and purpose.
Writing
Writing is taught through high‑quality, engaging texts that inspire pupils to write for a range of audiences and purposes. Grammar, punctuation and spelling are explicitly taught and embedded within writing units. Pupils refine their drafting, editing and presentation skills, developing confidence and accuracy as writers.
Maths
Daily maths lessons follow the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics curriculum alongside elements from the White Rose Maths Hub (where appropriate), enabling pupils to build secure conceptual understanding and apply their knowledge with increasing sophistication. Concrete, pictorial and abstract approaches support learning and pupils are encouraged to reason mathematically and solve problems with resilience and creativity. Times tables fluency is also a key focus throughout KS2 and is developed using the Number Sense programme.
Wider Curriculum
Our broad and balanced wider curriculum enables pupils to deepen their subject knowledge and develop disciplinary skills across all areas. Whether investigating forces in Science, exploring historical civilisations, composing music or developing coding skills in Computing, pupils are taught the essential knowledge and vocabulary needed to progress. Learning is enriched through practical experiences, local studies and opportunities to make meaningful connections across subjects.
This curriculum aspires to support pupils to leave KS2 well‑prepared for the challenges of secondary school, equipped with strong academic foundations, confidence in their abilities and a positive attitude towards learning.
